01 – Overview

Google: Rio Olympics

Role: Lead Motion Designer, Illustrator

Brand Studio ran a real-time newsroom during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games to uncover unexpected trends and insightful searches. Our team accessed information from Google Trends to create fun, playful and relevant data visualizations. I led a team of motion designers, designers and illustrators to create content for social and a trends site.

02 – Process

Prior to the Olympics, I created a simple character using dots and lines. We quickly realized that this was a highly modular visual system that could be scaled to build animations for all sports. Additionally, the dots and lines lent themselves well to data visualizations. Our team created animations for every single Olympic sport.

During the Olympics, content strategists mined Google search data to find the most interesting trends around the games. Our team’s animation templates enabled us to react quickly. We tweaked the pre-existing animations to create bespoke content for social and pushed out content across social on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

03 – Social Posts

For Instagram posts, we added a paper texture and dropped frames to make it feel more hand crafted.
